New Library in Progress for North Chickasaw Trail

I have great news to share! The Library is beginning the process to open a Branch Library at 870 North Chickasaw Trail near the Valencia College Lane intersection. An estimated opening date will be set as soon as the extent of remodeling changes is determined.

Placing a new branch in this area has been a priority as East Orlando continues to grow rapidly. There are already more than 100,000 residents within a 3-mile radius of this location. We will have great neighbors including the east campus of Valencia Community College and the newly constructed Colonial High School 9th Grade Center and will be only a mile from both Colonial Drive and Lake Underhill Road.

This facility, formerly an automobile insurance call center, will be 30% larger than any other System branch with nearly 17,000 square feet. Some structural changes will be required to adapt the building and grounds to library use but acquiring an existing building instead of building from scratch will save both time and money. Our plans for the new library include open spaces, plenty of natural light and plenty of parking spaces, we see this as an opportunity to create a new generation of branches so we will be seeking input from the community and local design firms to assure the creation of a unique and inviting space for our customers.

With the acquisition of this building, we can jump start the implementation of the Branch Master Plan I shared with you last month. I would like to thank the members of the Governing Board, the Library Board of Trustees, and of course, you the Library Customer whose support made this new project possible.

Watch this blog and the Library’s website, www.ocls.info, for information on how you can participate in this exciting new adventure! Opportunities to provide your input will become available both in person and online.
