Hello Library Patrons and Friends,
Spring has sprung and the days are getting longer – giving you more time to enjoy all that the Orange County Library System has to offer. OCLS invites the entire community to celebrate spring with a variety of free cultural programs that range from musical performances to panel discussions, from author talks to book clubs.
If you’re into genealogical research, join the library's own Gregg Gronlund for helpful information on navigating the many genealogical resources for those of Irish descent. Be there when Gronlund presents Did Your Mother Come from Ireland? on Saturday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Orlando Public Library.
One sure way to “jazz” up the season is by tuning into our Jazz Discussion Series. This special series includes live music, DVD archive footage and discussion. Rollins College jazz scholar and bassist Chuck Archard will lead the series.
On a more somber note, April is also “tax month,” and the library is here to help. Tax assistance from AARP volunteers will be offered through April 15 at the Herndon Branch Monday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; at the South Creek Branch Thursday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and at the Southeast Branch Tuesday and Thursday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Links to IRS tax forms also available on the OCLS Web site.
Another serious issue is property tax reform, a hot topic in Tallahassee this legislative session. Sweeping changes have been proposed to the state’s current property tax system. If passed, this reform will have significant impacts on local governments and library services. The Orange County Library System currently receives 85 percent of its funding through property taxes. Please stay informed of this issue and be aware of the consequences it may have locally.
Finally, mark your calendar and save the date for our Annual Spring Book Sale coming up in May when everything will be half-price. The sale is Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19. And remember – Friends of the Library have access to the special “Preview Sale” on Thursday evening, May 18 when the very best buys are available. So if you’re not a member of the Friends, join today and take advantage of your membership benefits next month at the sale.
See you at the Library!
