Back to School
Summer has flown by and it's hard to believe the kids head back to school this month. Hopefully, they've enjoyed the break but kept up the reading as part of our annual Summer Reading Program. We'll celebrate the end of summer with two special parties this month and all area students are invited. For children, the Summer Splash Bash is Saturday, August 21 at 3 p.m. at the Orlando Public Library. Teens, you get your turn on Thursday, August 12 at 6 p.m. when we host the End-of-Summer Beach Blast at the Orlando Public Library in Library Central.
We also invite you to savor the last of summer in star-studded fashion with our Star Wars Celebration. Join us for a screening of Star Wars: The Clone Wars as we gear up for the biggest Star Wars party in the galaxy - Star Wars Celebration V - coming August 12 - 15 to the Orange County Convention Center! Screenings are scheduled at multiple library locations.
Did you know August is National Sandwich Month? OCLS is teaming up with Subway to bring you sensational sub samples and a visit from Subway's mascot "Subman." Delicious fun awaits you at the Winter Garden, Hiawassee and West Oaks branches this month.
Thanks for making OCLS part of your summer. And to all our students, here's to another successful school year.

Here's to a safe and fun July 4 holiday! As a reminder, OCLS and all library locations will be closed on Sunday, July 4 and Monday, July 5. In star-spangled fashion, we have a wide array of varied programs to get your month started with a bang. And of course, our annual Summer Reading Program for kids and teens continues throughout the month with many entertaining programs and activities at a library near you.
If better health is a goal for you, please check out our Community Health Awareness session on June 14 at the Orlando Public Library. Dr. Yen Nguyen of Long Family Chiropractic Center will share tips to keep your kids healthy without the use of dangerous prescription drugs as well as how to boost your child's immune system.
Gather the kids and drop by the West Oaks branch library on Saturday, July 24 for an interactive workshop on the well-being of animals, the environment and other people. Youngsters will learn what it means to be humane plus there's a real treat on tap - the chance to meet two pot-bellied piglets.
Need a project for the summer? How about exploring your family heritage? OCLS will host a Genealogy Research Day at the Orlando Public Library on July 28. This is your chance to get acquainted with the largest public library genealogy collection in the Southeastern U.S. Staff will offer information about materials, equipment and resources as well as provide research assistance.
When you take a break from the summer heat, we hope you'll make one of our libraries your destination. You're sure to find something to enrich, enlighten or entertain you this month.
