Southwest's New Look!

For the past few weeks, Southwest customers have walked in on a mess! Contractors have been busy remodeling the front entrance - putting in new flooring, lights, and wall covering. The project is almost complete with only some more wall covering and display furniture left to install. This remodeling project is part of the Dr. Phillips Rotary Club Library Project (see March 29, 2006 post on this blog).

Come in and see the more bright and beautiful entrance. Watch for more Library Project updates and photos on this blog.

Sandra Namur Art Exhibit

The Southwest Library is pleased to present "A Mother's Peace: Paintings in the Impressionism Style," an exhibit by local artist Sandra Namur. Sandra's paintings will be on display October through December.

Sandra was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She completed her first picture at age five and has not stopped creating art. She is a master of drawing and other art techniques. Sandra has won numerous awards for her art from around the world including Brazil, Paris and Mexico. In 2004, her painting "Paris Garden" (shown above on right) was on exhibit at the Orlando Museum of Art. Sandra is married and a mother of two sons. Her greatest artistic inspiration is the 19th century Impressionist painters. But she draws much inspiration from her family too. In fact, family and painting bring much peace to her heart.

For questions or comments about the exhibit, please call 407.835.7323 or email mayer.sandy(at)ocls.info. Also, be sure to stop and see the display of art books on Impressionism and Impressionist artists.

Tech News to Use - MySpace and Partners Offering Parents Help

No doubt MySpace has become a successful online social network phenonemem --with more than 100 million profiles created by users, including chief executives and Fortune 500 companies. Unfortunately, child predators have made it "TheirSpace" too. But there is more good news. MySpace will announce a partnership with Seventeen magazine, the National School Boards Association and the National Association of Independent Schools to offer parents tips on how to protect minors online. Brochures will also be distributed to about 55,000 schools representing grades 7 through 12 in the United States during October.

To download the guide for parents, surfers can click on "Safety Tips" found at the bottom of MySpace's home page. It also offers an option for parents to remove their child's profile, information on monitoring software, and links to other Internet safety resources.
