Photo Gallery - New Children's Area Construction Update

The construction on Southwest's childrens area is almost complete. Just a little more detail work and installation of computers is planned. But our little customers and their parents have been enjoying the new decor and furniture. Both staff and customers agree the wait was worth it!

Doris Lessing wins Noble Prize in Literature

The Noble Prizes were created when founder Alfred B. Nobel (1833-96) bequeathed $9 mil, the interest on which was to be distributed yearly to those judged to have most benefited humankind in physics, chemistry, medicine-physiology, literature, and promotion of peace. Prizes were first awarded in 1901. The 1st prize in economics was awarded in 1969, funded by Sweden's central bank. Each prize is now worth about 10 mil Swedish kroner (about $1.3 mil). Google Presentations

September 18, 2007 was the release date of Google Presentations. This is a PowerPoint-like application added to the Google Docs & Spreadsheets (which is now called Google Docs).
Google Presentation allows you to create slides and apply pre-defined themes, layouts, add images or text and organize it any way you want. You can also import your exisiting presentation files here. It has a simple interface which may benefit those who currently struggle using presentation tools.

Another neat feature of this application is users will be able to manage and share presentations by just sending email invites and this would enable them to edit the presentation together online in real-time or at different times. Users can also present and control the slide shows over the Web without any additional software and simultaneoulsy chat with viewers via integrated chat.

Check out the Google Tour for more information about this application and feel free to create a Google Account if you haven't done so.

Keep checking our blog for more computer tips and tricks. Also, register for computer classes at any Orange County library. Remember these classes are free for Orange County residents.

Southwest Book Club Meets October 9

Marchbrooks.jpg
The Southwest Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Southwest Library to discuss the book, March by Geraldine Brooks.

In this Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction in 2006, Brooks imagines the Civil War experiences of Mr. March, the absent father in Louisa May Alcott's, Little Women. Mr. March is an idealist and a man of faith whose convictions are challenged by the horrors of war.

Anyone age 18 or older is welcome to attend. The book club meets monthly at the Southwest Branch Library. For more information, please call 407.835.7323 or email southwest(at)ocls.info
