Southwest Book Club Meets October 26


The Southwest Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Southwest Library to discuss Hiding in the Spotlight by local author Greg Dawson. In this remarkable biography, Dawson, a consumer columnist at the Orlando Sentinel writes about his mother, pianist Zhanna Arkashyna. Zhanna's life changed in 1941 when her Jewish family from Ukraine were led along with thousands to their execution by the Nazis. Zhanna, a gifted piano prodigy managed to escape and use her rare musical gift to survive the Holocaust.

Xinlin Fan Art Studios Exhibit October-December 2010

An exhibit featuring the art students at Xinlin Fan Art Studios of Orlando is on display at the Southwest Library October through December 2010. Children and adult students of Xinlin Fan are showing their works of oil and acrylic paintings depicting landscapes, portraits and still lifes; sketch/drawings and sculpture.
Xinlin Fan was an Art and Crafts artist of the Research Institute of Guizhou Artists Association of China, member of the Chinese Artists Association and an associate professor in China from 1982 to 1993. He was a former senior artist at Walt Disney Animation. Today, Xinlin remains a visiting professor of two universities, Guizhou Normal University and Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute of China. In China, he became devoted to the education of students. His focus is to develop a student's artistic potential and help create a life-long interest in the arts. Xinlin has done many workshops in the United States and Canada. He has 30 years teaching experience. Many of his former students now teach at universities and are professional artists. Also, students of Xinlin have won awards in significant art shows and exhibitions.
Xinlin teaches art classes for children and adults at the Xinlin Fan Art Studios in Orlando. His teaching methods have achieved astounding results with all ages, including those with learning disabilities. Classes are offered in quick sketch, sketch, color, still life, landscape, portrait, art creation and clay sculpture. Whether you belong to a book club in your neighborhood or church, at work or at the library, you know the value and joy of shared reading. In honor of National Reading Group Month, Southwest Library is having a prize drawing in October for book club members to enter and win a gift certificate from Publix for their book club. Buy refreshments for your next club meeting! In addition, the winning book club will be able to share their reading experiences with others in the community by being the featured book club on the Southwest Blog.

You may register for the drawing in person at the Southwest Library or in the "Comments" area of this blog post. Please include your name, library card barcode/number, phone and/or email and the name of the book club you attend. Be sure to stop by our Book Club Resources Table to learn about tools the library has to offer to enhance your book club experience. Want to join or start a book club? Drawing Rules:
1. Open to Orange County Resident library card holders age 18 or older.

2. Not open to the Southwest Book Club attendees and Orange County Library System
employees or their families.

3. Must attend a book club (book club defined as 3 or more people meeting on a regular schedule at which time the main focus is to discuss a selected book or books). Sorry, due to the nature of the prize drawing, online book clubs do not qualify.

4. One entry per book club attendee.

5. Drawing winner will be notified either by phone or email.
