Meet Kid Author-Nikita

Southwest Library has been featuring on this blog several of the children who attended the Be an Author! program last October presented by author Maria Cox. These kid authors (in the same vein as Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer by John Grisham!) spent the afternoon learning a fun approach for how to write a story using descriptive sentences and to draw illustrations with different levels of detail to represent their story.

This week we feature our last kid author. Her name is Nikita. In her story, Art Projects Nikita shares how she enjoys feeling creative while making all sorts of beautiful and fun art.

Southwest Art Club - Watercolor Workshop

The Southwest Art Club in partnership with Women in the Arts Inc. held a watercolor painting workshop on Saturday, February 1. Fifteen participants learned the fundamentals of watercolor painting taught by professional artist, Regine Dossche. By the end of the workshop, each participant had created a floral-themed painting.

This week's featured kid author is Aaditya. He has a lot of fun playing video games. Aaditya's story, Variety Video Game Story has the words and wonderfully detailed illustrations to prove it.

This week's featured kid author is Nora. There is no doubt about it...Nora loves to dance! In her story, Dancing is Fun, Nora shares all the reasons why she feels so happy whenever she dances.

This week's featured kid author is Chelsea. She tells a tale of models, fashion, and mystery in her story, The Mystery Fashion Show. Chelsea's descriptions and illustration make you feel you are sitting right there at the fashion runway!

Meet Kid Author- Jordan

On Saturday, October 19, seventeen children and thirteen adults attended the Be an Author! program at Southwest Library presented by Maria Cox, Ph.D., co-owner of Dancing Lilies Press; Children's Book Publisher, and author of the loved Virginia -Lee series.

Over the next few months, Southwest Library will feature several of the children and their stories on our blog. The children or "kid authors" (in the same vein asTheodore Boone, Kid Lawyer by John Grisham!) spent the afternoon learning a fun approach for how to write a story using descriptive sentences and how to draw illustrations to represent their story with different levels of detail.

Our first featured kid author is Jordan. He loves all kinds of cars but focused his story on one of his favorites, the Chevy Camaro. He called his story Cars: Chevy Camaro

Southwest Art Club Series Begins

The Southwest Art Club Series in partnership with Women in the Arts Inc. (WITA) held the first workshop in the series on Saturday, August 3 at the Southwest Library. A series of four workshops with a focus on oil painting will be held the first Saturday of every month through November 2. Leah Wiedemer, a Florida artist is the instructor for the series.

Meet the Author: Joy Johnson

Readers of the BOOB (Burned Out Old Broads) Girls series had a chance to meet the author, Joy Johnson on March 15 at the Southwest Library.

Joy Johnson is the author and editor of more than 100 books on grief and bereavement primarily in children. She is a nationally-known speaker at bereavement conferences throughout the United States, Canada and New Zealand since 1977. The BOOB Girls and The BOOB Girls II are her first comedy-mystery novels. A third BOOB Girl adventure, Sandhills and Shadows will be released in 2011.

Summer Mystery Fun for Southwest Book Club


At their August meeting, the Southwest Book Club enjoyed reading the Zachary Chasteen mysteries written by Florida author, Bob Morris. A tablescape and fruit punch helped set the mood to discuss the books which are a mixture of mystery and humor taking place in Florida and the Caribbean.

Southwest Volunteer Receives Friends of the Library Award

award.JPGVolunteer Lori Nierenberg received an award for the volunteer with the most hours from the Friends of the Library at their Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 8, 2010 held at the downtown Orlando Public Library. Lori provided a total of 285 volunteer hours this past year!

The staff at Southwest Library thank Lori for all the great help she provides to customers and the library. Congratulations, Lori on a job well done!

Southwest Book Club Goes Green!

During their 3rd year anniversary celebration on January 15, attending members of the Southwest Book Club were each given an OCLS's orange "green" bag by an anonymous donor. Everyone here wants to say "Thank You." The OCLS's green bags can be purchased at any of our locations for $1.41 plus tax.

Self-Checkout Coming to Southwest

Self-checkout is coming to the Southwest Library!

The photos below indicate currently things are a bit topsy-turvy and messy as the conversion to self-checkout is underway. But the excitement builds as it all comes together and this new service becomes available to Southwest customers. All customers will need a PIN number. So be sure to get one soon, if you do not have one. Just ask a library staff person.

The library's summer reading program provided opportunity for parents and children at Southwest to meet and talk with real firefighters of the Orange County Fire Department and to tour their truck. Attendees even got a chance to try out the fire hose!

Photo Gallery - New Computer Classroom at Southwest

Another renovation job has been completed at Southwest. The result is a new classroom complete with new tables, 8 computers and a screen. Southwest also received additional computers for the public to use. Our technology instructors are overjoyed and we have heard many positive comments from our patrons. Thanks to all the electricians, network engineers and our own IS Department for a job well done!

Photo Gallery - Author Martha Powers at Southwest April 27

Martha Powers, thriller/mystery writer from Vero Beach, Florida captivated the audience with her wit and humor about the writing life and discussed her latest book, Death Angel. Afterwards, Richard Maladecki, Dr. Phillips Rotary Club member informed Ms Powers that Rotary high school scholarship funds will be given in her honor and presented her with a certificate. Ms Powers spent time after her presentation talking with the audience and signing copies of her book. Martha Powers was the second in the Dr. Phillips Rotary Club's Author Series held annually in partnership with the Orange County Library System.

Bring Your Son and Daughter to Work April 26

It wasn't exactly a son or daughter, but Joseph, grandson of Southwest circulation clerk, Alba; and Brandon, nephew of Southwest circulation clerk, Norma enjoyed their day "working" at the Southwest Library. We appreciated their enthusiasm (and bravery!) for helping out. It was a joy to see our jobs through "new eyes."

Carol Smith, local collector and quilter talks to a group about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman. Her presentation included a quilt sampler depicting symbolism used to aid escaping slaves. Carol's collection of Underground Railroad documents and photos will be on exhibit at the Southwest Library during March and April 2007.
