Ferguson's Career Guidance Center | November 16, 2009

Last month we looked at the Career Transitions database on the OCLS website. That was only one of the many services OCLS provides to its cardholders. Let's take a look at another.

Facts on File / Ferguson's Career Guidance Center*

In this database, you will find three main sections: Job Profiles, Skills, and Resources.

The Job Profiles section contains information on more than 3,300 jobs and 94 industries. Jobs and Industry profiles are grouped into 16 clusters. Clicking on one of these clusters will link you to an overview of careers in that field, and then link you to career possibilities and even related careers. This will give you a lot to think about if you're looking to reinvent yourself and start a new career.

In the Skills section you'll find information that will help you prepare your resume & cover letter and improve your job hunting skills. Use the sample résumés and cover letters that are provided; that's why they're there! The career skills area will guide you in learning how to communicate, how to be organized and be a team player. There is even a section dedicated to tips on how to gain the professional edge. So if you are looking for a job, don't forget to take advantage of this area of the database.

If you find you need to go back to school to acquire additional skills, visit the Resources section. Learn about scholarships, financial aid, internships, volunteering, apprenticeships, mentoring and much more.

In a time when the harvest of job seekers is ripe, but the employers are few, this database is ... priceless.
